What is it:

Rehmania Six (Liu Wei Di Huang Tang) Herbal Tincture is the classical formula in Chinese Medicine for nourishing the yin of the Kidney and Liver.  It is often used to address menopause, fatigue, menstrual irregularities, and insomnia.

Its applicability, however, is far broader than simply helping regulate women’s health concerns. Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency is a very common pattern of imbalance in the hustle culture of the West, and this formula has a very broad applicability to address what one might call "signs of aging"-- lower back pain, sore knees, night sweats, insomnia, etc...

What is it good for:

  • Fatigue/tiredness
  • Weak or sore knees
  • Lower back pain or weakness
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ear), dizziness & vertigo)
  • Many other symptoms related to aging

    Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

    • Nourishes Kidney and Liver Yin/Blood

What else you might like to know:

This formula nourishes yin. In TCM theory, yin is an actual substance-- it is the cooling, nourishing fluids that circulate and permeate the body. As yin slowly dries up due to overwork and the aging process, the body slowly heats up over time... think of a radiator in a car running low-- if there is not enough coolant in the system, the engine overheats. It's not a perfect analogy, but it gives an idea of what is happening in the body during yin defiency.

Also-- Chinese herbs work differently from Western drugs – they help clear the root of the problem, and this formula is a perfect example of that principle in action. In other words, the herbs don't "cure" anything; rather, they slowly restore balance over a period of weeks or months (in conjunction w/other factors like sleep and diet). So, for example, if you take a pain reliever for lower back pain or soreness behind the knees, the symptom of pain might be blocked for a short period of time, but the fundamental imbalance at the root of the pain (i.e. yin deficiency) remains unaffected and the problem then becomes experienced  as "chronic".

    Frequently asked questions

What is Liu Wei Di Huang Tang?

Liu Wei Di Huang Tang, known in English as Rehmannia Six or Six Flavor Rehmannia, is the classical Chinese medicine formula for nourishing kidney and liver yin. In TCM, yin is the cooling, moistening substance of the body, and it tends to run low with overwork, stress and age. Our root + spring version is a liquid herbal tincture made in the USA.

What is Rehmannia Six traditionally used for?

In Chinese medicine, Rehmannia Six is traditionally used for kidney and liver yin deficiency. That pattern often shows up as tiredness, weak or sore knees and lower back, night sweats, restless sleep, dizziness and ringing in the ears, the kinds of signs many people associate with aging. It is also widely used for women's health patterns around menopause and menstrual changes.

What herbs are in Rehmannia Six?

Rehmannia Six contains the six classic herbs of the formula, prepared rehmannia (shu di huang), cornelian cherry (shan zhu yu), Chinese yam (shan yao), poria (fu ling), Asian water plantain (ze xie) and tree peony root bark (mu dan pi). Three herbs nourish the kidney, liver and spleen, and three balance them by draining dampness and clearing heat.

How do I take Rehmannia Six tincture?

Shake well before each use. For a maintenance serving, add 1 to 2 droppers (about 1/2 teaspoon) in warm water or juice, 2 to 3 times daily. For an augmented serving, take 1 full teaspoon 2 to 3 times daily in warm water or juice, or as directed by a qualified herbalist familiar with Chinese formulas.

How can I reduce the alcohol in a Chinese herbal tincture?

To evaporate most of the alcohol from Rehmannia Six, add your dose to a little hot water and let it sit for a few minutes before drinking. The heat lets much of the alcohol cook off while the herbs stay in the water. Mixing the dose into warm water or juice also softens the strong herbal taste.

Rehmannia Six vs Rehmannia Eight, what is the difference?

Both start from the same six herbs. Rehmannia Six (Liu Wei Di Huang) is the gentler foundation for nourishing kidney yin. Rehmannia Eight (Zhi Bai Di Huang) adds anemarrhena root (zhi mu) and phellodendron bark (huang bai), two cooling herbs, so it is chosen when yin deficiency comes with clear heat signs like night sweats or hot flashes. A practitioner can help if you are unsure which fits.

How long does it take for Liu Wei Di Huang to work?

Rehmannia Six works slowly. Chinese herbs are not meant to block a symptom quickly the way a pain reliever does. They gradually restore balance over weeks or months, especially when paired with better sleep and diet. Most people take it steadily for at least several weeks before deciding how well it suits them.

Who should not take Rehmannia Six?

Avoid Rehmannia Six during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a practitioner advises it. Because it is rich and moistening, it may feel heavy for people with weak digestion, loose stools or a lot of bloating. The tincture contains alcohol, so keep that in mind if you avoid alcohol. If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor or a licensed Chinese medicine practitioner first.
