Chinese Herbs for Digestion and Digestive Comfort

Digestion is the center of gravity in Chinese herbal medicine. The tradition holds that the spleen and stomach are where the body extracts usable energy from food, and that a great many complaints elsewhere trace back to that process working poorly. It is why this is our largest condition collection — more than 70 teas, formulas, tinctures and raw herbs.

How the Tradition Sorts Digestive Complaints

Rather than one category called "indigestion," Chinese herbalism distinguishes between food that is not moving (stagnation), a system that is not extracting enough (deficiency), and excess fluid or heaviness (dampness). The formulas are quite different, and taking a stagnation formula for a deficiency pattern generally does nothing useful.

  • Fullness and bloating after eating — traditionally read as food stagnation. Herbs: hawthorn berry (Shan Zha), aged tangerine peel (Chen Pi).
  • Low appetite, loose stool, fatigue after meals — traditionally read as spleen qi deficiency. Formulas: Four Gentlemen (Si Jun Zi Tang), Healthy Spleen Combo.
  • Heaviness and sluggishness — traditionally read as dampness. Formulas: Citrus & Pinellia (Er Chen Tang), poria mushroom.
  • Discomfort that worsens with stress — traditionally read as liver qi affecting the stomach. Formula: Free and Easy Wanderer (Xiao Yao Tang).

Frequently Asked Questions

What Chinese herb is best for bloating?

Aged tangerine peel (Chen Pi) and hawthorn berry (Shan Zha) are the two most commonly used, and both appear in our Beat the Bloat tea. Chen Pi is traditionally described as moving stagnant qi in the middle; Shan Zha specifically as helping the body handle rich and fatty food.

Should I take digestive herbs before or after eating?

Herbs meant to move stagnation are traditionally taken after meals, when there is something to move. Tonifying formulas aimed at building digestive capacity are usually taken between meals on a relatively empty stomach.

Can I take these long term?

Tonic formulas like Four Gentlemen are designed for extended use. Strong moving or purging herbs are not, and should be used in short courses. If a digestive complaint has persisted for months, the useful step is finding out why rather than managing it indefinitely.

When should I see a doctor?

Persistent digestive symptoms can indicate conditions that require medical diagnosis. See a physician for unexplained weight loss, blood in stool, difficulty swallowing, severe or persistent pain, or symptoms lasting more than a few weeks.

Do these interact with acid reducers or other medication?

Some herbs affect stomach acid and gut motility, which can change how medications are absorbed. Talk to your pharmacist before combining these with proton pump inhibitors, antacids or any prescription medication.
